Leadpoint is a little known mining camp located in the Northern part of Stevens County. It derives its name from the high-grade deposits of lead ore which were discovered in the early 1890s in the near by mountains. Leadpoint became the main distribution center for many of the mines in the area.
It came into its own around 1915 when a trapper decided to take a look at a spot where lightning continuously struck near the same spot on a mountain. He explored this area and finally located a large tree blacken and split by numerous lightning strikes. He noticed several pieces of lead ore lying on the ground around and near the tree. He picked up a few samples and returned to Leadpoint.
Several months later a fellow prospector examined the ore samples and determined that it was of high grade lead ore.
The next day the two of them set out to locate the lightning scarred tree. Luck was with them that day, after several hours of searching the mountain they not only located the lightning tree but also an incredibly rich chimney of galena, (high grade lead ore.) On July 2, 1915 they recorded their claim and named it the Electric Point. The Electric Point became one of the most fabulous nines in Stevens County, producing millions of dollars in profits.
Mostly on the strength of the Electric Point, Leadpoint grew to a respectable population of nearly 200 souls. It had a hotel, general store, barbershop, and a few other businesses.
Not much remains today where the once boom town of Leadpoint once stood. A few old abandoned structures with there weathered boards are about all that is left near the old townsite. Even the ghosts have surrendered and departed.
